If you are a fan of Kolkata Knight Riders it would be heart breaking to see the black line horizontal…

While Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore did well to recover from the worst position they were in after first 5 matches. Chennai Super Kings just had 3 points and Royal Challengers had 2 points. Deccan Chargers and Mumbai Indians were the teams to give away the early advantage they had. They both lost 4 matches in a row.

Deccan Chargers won by 6 wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders in yesterday’s second match, Match No. 48 of DLF IPL 2009 held at New Wanderers, Johannesburg. It looked like Kolkata Knight Riders might break their losing steak when Deccan Chargers needed 21 of the last over. But Rohit Sharma took away little chance by scoring them without panicking. Kolkata Knight riders lost their 8th match in a row and have two more matches to make it 10 in a row.

IPL 2009 – Match 48 – Kolkata Knight Riders Vs Deccan Chargers – Full Scorecard

Hussey scored quick fire 43 in 17 balls.

Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to field on a good batting pitch. McCullum and Ganguly opened the innings for Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum was the first man to be dismissed and top edged a slower delivery from Harris to Suman at square leg. He scored 20 runs from 18 balls. Ganguly struggled to put bat on ball. Deccan Chargers bowled well not giving away anything. Knight Riders just managed 50/1 in their first 10 overs with Ganguly on 14(23) and Hodge on 13(19). It looked like Knight Riders will be restricted to below 120. Ganguly continued to struggle and was caught at long-off by Harris of the bowling of Rohit Sharma. Ganguly took 41 balls to score 33 runs. Hussey was the next batsman and his intentions were clear to clear the boundary. Hodge got out for 48 runs(41 balls) in the similar fashion like McCullum to a slower delivery from Harris. Kolkata Knight Riders were struggling at 118/3 after 18 overs. But the next over yielded 28runs, the maximum runs scored in an over in this IPL. RP Singh started the over but bowled 2 no balls over waist-high and he was taken out of the attack. He just bowled 1 legal delivery and conceded 8 runs. Harmeet Singh continued the over and Hussey hit him all over the park scoring 20 runs in 5 balls. The over looked like (1nb, 1, 4nb, 4, 2, 2, 6, 6) and all of a sudden Kolkata reached 146 with 6 balls to spare. Saha and Hussey got out in the last over after scoring a six each in previous ball. At the end of 20 overs Kolkata Knight Riders scored 160/5 including 42 runs in last 2 overs.

Deccan Chargers needed 161 runs for a victory. Gilchrist and Gibbs opened the innings for Deccan Chargers. Gilchrist played aggressively and the opening pair scored 68 runs in 9.2 overs. Gilchrist scored 43 runs in 31 balls and lost his wicket of the bowling of Hodge. Deccan Chargers were 71/1 and needed 90 runs in 60 balls during strategic break. Kartik bowled brilliantly and took the wicket of Gibbs and he scored 28 runs in 34 balls. Kartik bowled his 4 overs just conceding 12 runs. Deccan Chargers needed 48 from last 24 balls. Suman was run out by Agarkar after scoring 31(24). Symonds scored few boundaries quickly but was run out by Mortaza. Symonds scored 18(13). Couple of tight overs by Agarkar and Mortaza raised the required run rate drastically. Deccan Chargers needed 21 runs of the last over with Rohit Sharma and Rao in the crease. Mortaza bowled the last over and the first ball was hit for four and declared no ball as there were only 3 fielders inside circle. Couple of singles and they needed 14 of 4 balls. Sharma hit six and four and they just needed single of the last ball. Rohit Sharma hit the winning runs with a huge six. Mashrafe Mortaza played his first match and broke the record of maximum runs conceded by a bowler in a match. He conceded 58 runs in 4 overs.

Yet again Kolkata Knight Riders lost a match from a comfortable position. They are yet to register their first victory as their 3 points were gifted by D/L method. Deccan Chargers added 2 more to their tally and were comfortably looking for a place in semi finals.

Today’s Matches:

Kings XI Punjab Vs Deccan Chargers
Rajasthan Royals Vs Delhi Daredevils

A must win situation for both Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. A win for Deccan Chargers means they move to second place and hence to the semi finals.

Brendon McCullum playing a paddle sweep

Royal Challengers won the toss and put Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. McCullum and Ganguly opened the innings for Kolkata. Ganguly got out early edging one to keeper, of the bowling of Vinay Kumar and he scored only a boundary in his 6 ball innings. Ghosh was the next man in and he lost his wicket scoring 7 in 7 balls. Hussey got the chance replacing Hodge, the top scorer for Kolkata in this version. Not sure what happened to him!? McCullum and Hussey played well to take Kolkata to 69/2 at strategic break. A good recovery from the bad start 21/2. Hussey was bowled by Akhil. Hussey scored 43 runs in just 27 balls and put on 70 run partnership with McCullum. McCullum scored his first fifty in this IPL and continued to strike well. He batted aggressively at the end and remained not out at 84 in just 64balls. Royal Challengers couldn’t keep the runs down at the end and they conceded 60 runs in last 4 overs, inspite of Kumble sliping in a tight over, 18th of the match, picking up a wicket just for four runs. Kolkata Knight Riders reached 173/4 in their 20 overs, their highest in this DLF IPL 2009.

Ross Taylor and Mark Boucher

Royal Challengers Bangalore started off slowly chasing a huge total of 174. Kallis and Ryder opened the innings. They kept their wickets in tact but just managed 46 Runs in the powerplay. McCullum brought an end to the opening stand as he latched a stunning catch to send Kallis back. Ryder followed his opening partner and fell in the next over top edging to Ganguly at third man. At the strategic break Royal Challengers were struggling at 70/2, requiring 104 runs in 60 balls. Uthappa got out the very first over after break for 7 runs in 9 balls. It was Taylor who did the magic to take Royal Challengers to an unbelievable victory. Royal Challengers needed 94 runs in 48 balls and Taylor scored 70 of them in just 26 balls. He was assited by Dravid who scored 12 in 12 and Boucher scoring 13 in 9. Taylor was also helped by poor bowling from Agarkar and Ishant Sharma. They bowled 17th, 18th and 19th over and conceded 47 runs in 18 balls when the opposition needed 52 of 24. Royal Challengers chased down 174 with 4 balls to spare and 6 wickets in hand. A high scoring match with lots of boundaries and sixes, a real treat to watch.

IPL 2009 – Match 42 – Mumbai Indians Vs Kings XI Punjab – Full Scorecard

On the other match, Mumbai Indians won by 8 wickets. Power failure prevented me from enjoying the good batting by Bravo and The Little Master, Sachin Tendulkar. Kings XI Punjab posted a low score of 119/9 in 20 overs, thanks to their poor batting. I was shocked to see Sangakkara, a batsman in good form, giving away too many dot balls in a 20-20 match. He scored 8 runs in 19 balls, not fair from a player of his standards. Mumbai Indians assited by good batting from Bravo and Sachin chased down the little target in 16.2 overs just losing 2 wickets.

IPL T20 Points table after 42 League matches

IPL T20 – Points table:

This victory pulled back things for Mumbai Indians and they moved to 4th position in the table. They now have 11 points and ahead of Rajasthan Royals only due to better run rate. Bangalore added 2 more points to their tally and move above Punjab with a better run rate.

Todays Match:

Delhi Daredevils Vs Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chargers must win this game to keep them in the top four, otherwise they will be forced to compete with other 4 teams for a place in Semi Finals. Delhi Daredevils would want to retain their winning streak and hence the top position.
