IPL T20 – Victory continues to be a Nightmare for Knight Riders
Cricket, General May 17th, 2009Deccan Chargers won by 6 wickets against Kolkata Knight Riders in yesterday’s second match, Match No. 48 of DLF IPL 2009 held at New Wanderers, Johannesburg. It looked like Kolkata Knight Riders might break their losing steak when Deccan Chargers needed 21 of the last over. But Rohit Sharma took away little chance by scoring them without panicking. Kolkata Knight riders lost their 8th match in a row and have two more matches to make it 10 in a row.

Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to field on a good batting pitch. McCullum and Ganguly opened the innings for Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum was the first man to be dismissed and top edged a slower delivery from Harris to Suman at square leg. He scored 20 runs from 18 balls. Ganguly struggled to put bat on ball. Deccan Chargers bowled well not giving away anything. Knight Riders just managed 50/1 in their first 10 overs with Ganguly on 14(23) and Hodge on 13(19). It looked like Knight Riders will be restricted to below 120. Ganguly continued to struggle and was caught at long-off by Harris of the bowling of Rohit Sharma. Ganguly took 41 balls to score 33 runs. Hussey was the next batsman and his intentions were clear to clear the boundary. Hodge got out for 48 runs(41 balls) in the similar fashion like McCullum to a slower delivery from Harris. Kolkata Knight Riders were struggling at 118/3 after 18 overs. But the next over yielded 28runs, the maximum runs scored in an over in this IPL. RP Singh started the over but bowled 2 no balls over waist-high and he was taken out of the attack. He just bowled 1 legal delivery and conceded 8 runs. Harmeet Singh continued the over and Hussey hit him all over the park scoring 20 runs in 5 balls. The over looked like (1nb, 1, 4nb, 4, 2, 2, 6, 6) and all of a sudden Kolkata reached 146 with 6 balls to spare. Saha and Hussey got out in the last over after scoring a six each in previous ball. At the end of 20 overs Kolkata Knight Riders scored 160/5 including 42 runs in last 2 overs.
Deccan Chargers needed 161 runs for a victory. Gilchrist and Gibbs opened the innings for Deccan Chargers. Gilchrist played aggressively and the opening pair scored 68 runs in 9.2 overs. Gilchrist scored 43 runs in 31 balls and lost his wicket of the bowling of Hodge. Deccan Chargers were 71/1 and needed 90 runs in 60 balls during strategic break. Kartik bowled brilliantly and took the wicket of Gibbs and he scored 28 runs in 34 balls. Kartik bowled his 4 overs just conceding 12 runs. Deccan Chargers needed 48 from last 24 balls. Suman was run out by Agarkar after scoring 31(24). Symonds scored few boundaries quickly but was run out by Mortaza. Symonds scored 18(13). Couple of tight overs by Agarkar and Mortaza raised the required run rate drastically. Deccan Chargers needed 21 runs of the last over with Rohit Sharma and Rao in the crease. Mortaza bowled the last over and the first ball was hit for four and declared no ball as there were only 3 fielders inside circle. Couple of singles and they needed 14 of 4 balls. Sharma hit six and four and they just needed single of the last ball. Rohit Sharma hit the winning runs with a huge six. Mashrafe Mortaza played his first match and broke the record of maximum runs conceded by a bowler in a match. He conceded 58 runs in 4 overs.
Yet again Kolkata Knight Riders lost a match from a comfortable position. They are yet to register their first victory as their 3 points were gifted by D/L method. Deccan Chargers added 2 more to their tally and were comfortably looking for a place in semi finals.

A must win situation for both Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals. A win for Deccan Chargers means they move to second place and hence to the semi finals.
